What Are Metatarsal Guard Boots — and Who Needs Them?

Met guard boots are the most commonly misunderstood safety footwear requirement in Louisiana industry, so here’s the plain-English version.

The Rating: ASTM Mt

Met guard boots are rated under the same standard as safety toes — ASTM F2413-18 — with an added Mt (metatarsal) rating, which certifies the guard absorbs a 75 foot-pound impact across the instep. On the label inside a rated boot you’ll see it listed alongside the toe rating, for example “Mt/75.”

Who Requires Them

• Refineries and chemical plants — many require met guards site-wide or for specific crafts, based on their dropped-object hazard assessments
• Turnaround and maintenance contractors — met guards are a common blanket requirement during turnarounds
• Pipe yards, fabrication shops, and heavy mechanical work — anywhere heavy stock moves by hand or crane

If your employer handed you a footwear spec with “Mt” or “metatarsal” anywhere in it, a standard safety toe will not pass — and site safety will check the label.

Internal vs. External Guards

Internal guards are built into the boot under the leather. They look like a normal work boot, flex naturally, and most people forget the guard is there — this is what we fit most.
