EH stands for Electrical Hazard. On the label of a work boot, an EH rating means the sole and heel are built to withstand 18,000 volts at 60 Hz for one full minute, in dry conditions, with no more than one milliamp of leakage — that’s the actual test behind the two letters, defined in ASTM F2413-18.
What EH Protects You From
EH is secondary protection against accidentally completing a circuit through your feet — stepping on a live wire, contacting an energized surface while grounded. For electricians, linemen, maintenance techs, and anyone working around energized equipment in Acadiana’s plants, it’s the difference a boot can make in a moment nobody planned.
What EH Does Not Do
- It does not replace insulated gloves, mats, tools, or lockout/tagout. It backs them up.
- It is rated dry. Water, sweat-soaked soles, and worn-through heels all reduce protection.
- It is not the same as SD (static-dissipating). SD boots intentionally bleed static to ground — the exact opposite job, used in electronics and some fuel-handling settings. A boot is one or the other, never both.
How to Check a Boot
Look at the sewn-in label inside the boot shaft: a rated boot lists the standard (ASTM F2413-18), the toe rating (I/75 C/75), and its extra letters — EH, Mt, PR, or SD. If your site spec says EH and the label doesn’t, it doesn’t pass, regardless of what the boot looks like.
