Louisiana is the toughest climate in the country on leather work boots. Between the humidity, the heat, the rain, and the chemicals on most job sites, your boots take a beating — and they need a regular maintenance routine to give you the full lifespan you paid for. Here’s the practical schedule we recommend to Lafayette customers.
Weekly: Quick Clean
Every weekend (or whenever they get noticeably dirty):
- Knock off mud and dust with a stiff brush or damp cloth
- Wipe down the leather with a clean damp rag — not soaked, just damp
- Let them air-dry naturally. Never put leather work boots near direct heat — no heaters, no clothes dryers, no sunlight on the dashboard. Heat dries the leather and causes cracking
Monthly: Condition
Once a month (more often if your boots are getting daily abuse):
- Clean first: wipe down with a damp cloth or use Red Wing Leather Cleaner for stubborn dirt
- Apply Red Wing Boot Oil for oil-tanned leathers (most work boots), or Red Wing Leather Cream for smooth/dressier leathers. Use sparingly — a thin coat on a soft cloth, worked in with circular motions
- Let it absorb for 15–20 minutes, then buff with a clean cloth
- For waterproof boots, follow up with Red Wing All-Natural Boot Wax to maintain the water-resistant finish
After a Soaking
If your boots get drenched (afternoon thunderstorm, working in standing water):
- Wipe off any surface water and debris
- Stuff with newspaper or boot trees — this absorbs moisture from the inside and helps the boot hold its shape
- Air-dry at room temperature, away from heat sources, for 24–48 hours
- Once fully dry, condition with Boot Oil to replace the natural oils washed out by the water
What Not to Use
- Mink Oil on light-colored or dressy Red Wings — it darkens leather permanently. Fine on rugged work boots, but know what you’re committing to
- Saddle soap — can strip oils and dry leather out faster than it cleans
- Off-brand “all-leather” conditioners — many are silicone-based and create a barrier that prevents future conditioning from absorbing
