Wide Work Boots: The EE Fitting Guide

Here’s a number that surprises people: at our Lafayette store, close to half the work boots we sell go out in a wide width. Working feet are wide feet — years of standing, boots, and honest labor spread a foot out. Yet most stores stock D width and call it a day, which means half of working Louisiana has never actually worn its true size.

What the Letters Mean

Boot sizes have two parts: length (the number) and width (the letter). D is standard for men. EE (also written 2E) is wide — more room across the ball of the foot and the toe box. EEE and beyond are extra wide; B is narrow. Same length, different width, completely different boot on your foot.

Signs You’ve Been Wearing the Wrong Width

• The ball of your foot bulges over the sole edge when you stand
• Pinky-toe numbness or a hot spot by mid-afternoon
• You buy a half size long just to get width — and then your heel slips and the toe creases wrong
• The boot feels great for an hour and hateful by lunch — feet swell during a shift, and a narrow boot has no room to give

That half-size-up trick is the most common self-inflicted fit problem we see. Length can’t fix width; it just moves the flex point of the boot to the wrong spot on your foot.
