How to Choose Work Boots: The Complete Guide

Red Wing Shoes of Lafayette — Lafayette, LA · Updated 2026-08-26

Buying work boots is a series of small decisions, and most people make them in the wrong order — color first, fit last. Here’s the order that actually works, the same path we walk customers through every day at the Lafayette store.

Step 1: What Does the Job Require?

Check the site’s PPE spec before anything else. ASTM F2413-18 safety toe is the baseline almost everywhere; many sites add EH (electrical hazard), some add metatarsal guards or tested slip resistance. The spec eliminates half the wall for you — bring it with you or read it to us on the phone.

Step 2: What Does Your Ground Look Like?

Flat and hard (concrete, shop floor, plate): a wedge sole spreads your weight and fights fatigue. Mud, slopes, and ladders: a heeled, lugged sole bites in and locks rungs. Wet ground means waterproof construction; standing water means rubber. In Louisiana, uninsulated is the answer to the insulation question.

Step 3: Pull-On or Lace-Up?

Mud, welding, in-and-out all day: pull-on. Climbing, ladders, uneven ground, hard-to-fit feet: lace-up. That one rule settles it for most trades.

Step 4: Steel or Composite Toe?

Same ASTM protection. Composite is lighter and doesn’t carry heat or cold — the Louisiana pick when the spec allows either. Steel is slimmer-profiled and often costs less.

Step 5: The Step Everyone Skips — Width

Nearly half the boots we fit go out in a wide width. If you’ve never been measured for width, this is the five minutes that changes everything: Brannock, 3D scan, and the same boot in D and EE on your feet back to back. Length can’t fix width — don’t buy a half size up to get room.

Step 6: Buy Where They Fit You

Every step above is easier in a store that stocks the widths, knows the specs, and measures instead of guessing. That’s the job here: 2207 Kaliste Saloom Rd, Lafayette · (337) 504-2701 — stock confirmed on the phone, same-day shipping nationwide, crews outfitted in one call.
